הַפְרָשַׁת חַלָּה

Hafrashas Challah · Ashkenaz

Nusach

Hafrashas Challah is the mitzvah of separating a small piece from a batch of dough. It recalls the portion that was once given to the Kohanim.

  1. If your dough needs a bracha (see the caution below), say the bracha first.
  2. Separate a small piece of the dough and say “Harei zo challah.”
  3. The separated piece is not eaten. Set it aside and dispose of it respectfully, as your rav guides you.

Please note: Whether challah must be separated at all, and whether the bracha is said, depends on the dough: which flour and other ingredients it is made from, how much flour is in the batch, and how it will be cooked. Authorities give different amounts, so this app doesn't give one. When unsure, ask your rav before you bake.

English translation

May it be Your will, Hashem our God and God of our fathers, that the mitzvah of separating challah be counted for me as if I had fulfilled it in all its details and fine points. May the challah that I lift up be considered like the offering that was brought upon the altar, and may it be accepted with favor. Just as, when the Beis HaMikdash stood, the challah was given to the Kohen and it brought atonement for sins, so may this separation bring atonement for my sins. Then I will be as if I were born anew, clean of sin and wrongdoing, and I will be able to keep the mitzvah of holy Shabbos and the Yamim Tovim with my husband (and our children), to be nourished by the holiness of these days. In the merit of the mitzvah of challah, may our children always be sustained from the hand of the Holy One, blessed is He, with His abundant mercy and kindness, and with great love. May the mitzvah of challah be accepted as if I had given maaser (a tenth). And just as I fulfill the mitzvah of challah with all my heart, so may the mercy of the Holy One, blessed is He, be awakened to guard me from sorrow and pain all the days. Amen, so may it be Your will.
